Rural Access Needs a Map Before a Ban

Rules written in Edmonton and Calgary can land differently in smaller communities. Alberta should map legal access before Bill 208 proceeds.

Rural policy has different consequences

In a large city, losing one legal product option may still leave adults several lawful alternatives nearby. In rural communities, the same change can mean longer travel, fewer inspected sellers, and more opportunity for informal supply.

Alberta already publishes public rules for vaping and tobacco. The missing piece is a regional access map that shows whether adults still have realistic, inspected legal options.

Three prairie questions

  1. How many inspected legal retailers serve each region?
  2. How often are rural sellers inspected?
  3. Where are illegal-supply complaints concentrated?
